  • "I first became a patient of Carol in the summer of 2024 after being diagnosed with vocal nodules and a vocal hemorrhage. As a singer, I was very nervous and unsure of what to expect in regards to treatment, prognosis and recovery. From the moment I met Carol in the lobby at the MGH Voice Center, I knew that I was in good hands! Her energy was the perfect mix of all that I needed in those initial moments and throughout my time at MGH. She was the perfect person to help me heal, as she provided her care with an amazing mix of confidence, care, empathy, and knowledge. During our first meeting, Carol was very sure to explain everything to me in a way that I understood. She answered all of my questions and even anticipated questions that I had before I knew I had them. This continued through our very last session. There was often a graduate student from the MGH IHP present during my sessions with Carol and I appreciated watching how Carol taught her so much during the sessions, and allowed opportunities for her to feel a part of the team but at the same time, never made me feel as if I was not under Carol's complete care. As I went through my recovery, I decided that I was interested in becoming a speech therapist, and this is largely because of Carol! I want to help people just as she helped me, not only physically but also emotionally. I am so incredibly thankful for her guidance and support and I know that she has played a huge part in my journey to become an SLP in the future. I will be attending Emerson College in September, 2025 to begin my Masters Degree in Communication Disorders, and I am forever thankful to her as she is so vital to having started me on this journey! I would highly recommend any patient to be under her care and, while I of course, never want to be injured again, I'm so sad that I won't work with her again! She is an incredible person!!"

  • "When I worked with Carol, I was struck by her giving nature and how much effort she put into connecting with me. I felt respected by her, and I respected Carol’s obvious depth of knowledge in the field of voice therapy. I have labored with my voice for the last few years—feeling strained to talk, complaining of soreness in what I thought were my lymph nodes, and hearing a crackle in my voice that seemed to belong to someone a lot older than my years. From the onset, Carol delivered an individually tailored program to my unique voice problem which provided my voice a pathway to heal. And heal it did! My voice hurt physically for years—but within 3 months of working with Carol, much of the physical strain in my voice lifted. My voice is smooth and more flowing. Carol also generously taught me how to personally maintain my voice to keep it in its topmost shape at any time in any place. I am very grateful to her."

  • "I can confidentally say that working with Carol transformed my life in ways that are hard to put into words. When I first met with Carol for voice therapy, I was in the midst of dealing with a rocky recovery from a surgery to remove vocal cord nodules. I was riddled with anxiety about my vocal health and could no longer speak or sing without fear of recurring injury. Needless to say, I was completely stuck. Carol met me where I was at and helped me develop a holistic plan to restore my voice to its fullest capabilities. She was very conscious and caring in regards to how deeply my voice was tied to my mental health, and she was able to incorporate mindfulness strategies to tackle the anxieties at the root of my vocal health struggles. If you want an SLP who will help you through your vocal recovery with tact, compassion, and unwavering support, Carol is the provider for you!"

  • "I have been a professional classical singer for over 50 years and had never experienced a vocal problem of any kind until a year ago, when I suddenly lost my voice. I hadn’t experienced an illness or injury that would have caused me to lose phonation, nor did I have a sore throat or any pain in my vocal tract. Dr Krusemark dove right into an extensive diagnostic process. She made recordings of my singing, presenting examples that might demonstrate vocal agility, tone, and pitch, and also recorded my speaking voice, reciting poems to evaluate cadence, and possible changes in timbre and vocal quality. Dr Krusemark is a very patient and careful listener. She was very interested in the answers I gave to her questions, allowing me to participate in the diagnostic process in a meaningful way. The fact that Dr Krusemark is also a classically trained vocalist, she was able to use my answers to inform her final decision regarding treatment based on our shared experiential knowledge. I was assigned various vocal exercises and given a special rehearsal mask to use when practicing, which, using negative air pressure, helped increase the strength and stamina of my aging vocal folds. After just a few months, my condition improved about 80%. I am continuing my exercises, and hope to have a full recovery in the near future. Dr Krusemark is an excellent speech therapist, and I am grateful for her dedication and expertise. She truly helped me make significant progress. I wish her good luck in her new position, and great success in all of her future professional endeavors."

  • "It is my privilege to share my story. It has a happy ending due the knowledge and expertise of Carol Krusemark. That story began with an incorrect vocal cord surgery, followed by inadequate therapy at a well-known hospital in the southeast … taking me from vocal limitations to no ability to sing at all. The joy I once treasured was now gone. I was informed by the surgeon that there was “nothing else they could do for me”, and I was being released as a patient. My voice was silenced for the next several years. But fate intervened and we moved north. Given our proximity to Boston, I decided to research specialists in the field once again. A local EMT suggested I seek Dr. James Burns at the Voice Center, officially the Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation. It was on that top floor at One Bowdoin Street that my life changed. Dr. Burns was able to quickly and accurately find the error and resulting issues with the previous surgery, and wearing a big smile said, “we can fix this!” After a successful reversal surgery, he recommended his most valued therapist, Carol Krusemark, for my rehabilitation and voice recovery. Requiring five hours of commute time each way, it was a commitment for long days. However, Carol tailored a schedule around those challenges of trains and driving … and we began. From the very first moment I met with Carol, I had “goosebumps”, lots of excitement and hope that she was exactly the person who could give me a voice again. Later that day as I drove from the train station toward home, I began to sing in the car. And then I sang a little more, and tested a little more. I had tears streaming down my face as I was singing notes I had been unable to produce for the previous eight years. Those notes were strong, and controlled, and me! As our sessions continued and more ability returned, I related that my goal was to sing a solo by Christmas. She was confident that my goal was attainable. It was and it happened even sooner. I sang that solo, and I felt as though I was soaring above the clouds. Carol has a special talent for this work, going beyond all of her years of training and experience in helping others. She was “born to do this”. And how blessed I was to have her guidance in the journey. If you are in need of vocal therapy, working with Carol Krusemark will truly be one of the most powerful experiences of joy in your life. While my age gives me new challenges and I continue with maintenance exercises I learned from her, I am whole again. Thank you Carol. I am honored to share this story with anyone seeking excellent rehabilitative expertise."

  • "As a professional singer, I was shattered by the news that my vocal folds weren't healthy, and that I required voice therapy. Carol Krusemark was not only calm, collected, and empathetic, but had a seemingly unending knowledge of tools to create a thorough plan to get me back to vocal health. She took a thorough intake diagnosis and treated every aspect of my vocal injury, including my multitude of feelings around it, with a grace and kindness that was inspiring to see both as a patient and as a fellow vocal educator. I feel infinitely lucky to have had her expertise and wisdom, and am now singing better than ever thanks to her expertise and care!"

  • "I worked with Carol intermittently both pre and post vocal surgery to remove my vocal nodules. Carol is the most gentle, thorough, caring and empowering speech pathologist I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Carol has the ability to meet you right where you are and help you navigate your vocal journey and goals through skilful collaboration. I felt extremely supported when I decided to go down the surgery route, having previously not wanted to, and Carol supported my every decision. I learnt invaluable exercises and knowledge that is now ingrained into my every day health practices such as laryngeal massage and a personalised vocal health regime that helped sustain what used to be my very easily tiring voice! I could not recommend Carol and her vast amount of knowledge more- if you are looking for a kind and conscientious person who really goes the extra mile for her patients- look no further!"

  • "I was referred to Carol Krusemark due to hoarseness brought on by weak vocal chord muscles. As a law professor, I did a lot of talking throughout each day. My hoarseness got so bad that I had to use a microphone, and even then, it was difficult for me to project my voice. I was referred to Carol by the MGH Throat Center. Carol and I met in person as well as on zoom. Her hands-on approach was invaluable. Unlike other therapists I had seen prior to Carol who seemed to follow a script that did not actually help me at all, Carol individualized each session to address my specific needs. With Carol, I was able to learn not only how to project my voice to avoid hoarseness, but also a range of exercises she developed for me that have enabled me to keep my voice in shape. Carol even incorporated into some of our sessions parts of the lectures I would be giving the following week to make sure that I would be able to maintain my voice throughout the lecture. I was sorry to hear that Carol has relocated. But for her new patients, you are very lucky! Carol is a caring, creative, highly competent, and professional therapist. I thank her for giving me my voice back and for teaching me how I can continue to use the exercises we did together to maintain my voice, even during periodic hoarseness episodes which will likely, for me, remain a lifetime challenge."

  • "Carol didn’t just help me improve my voice—she transformed how I view injury and recovery. When I was first diagnosed, I was terrified to use my voice and worried about jeopardizing my career. From our very first session, Carol created a safe, supportive space where I could share both my physical and emotional concerns. She helped me see that managing a voice injury isn’t just about eliminating it, but about finding strategies that work for me so I can heal and thrive. Thanks to Carol, I now have the tools and knowledge to care for my voice for the long term—something no other teacher had given me. She is attentive, compassionate, and truly invested in her clients’ well-being. After working with her, I can confidently say that I will continue to implement the tools she has taught me moving forward as I receive my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre, and in future contracts!"

  • "My daughter began working with Carol after being referred by her laryngologist. Through their work together, she learned essential skills to keep her voice healthy and manage vocal use as she begins her college journey in musical theater. Carol is compassionate, empathetic, and deeply understanding. She was consistently patient, kind, and validating, helping my daughter feel truly heard and supported. We are so grateful to have found Carol. She has been an invaluable part of my daughter’s well-being and growth."

I am confident in saying that my voice and singing have become much stronger and easier under her guidance. Carol Krusemark takes time to understand you as a person and your individual needs when it comes to your voice and adjusts her treatment accordingly. She not only teaches you skills and strategies to help improve your voice, but she makes sure you’re practicing in a way that’s helpful for you and that doesn’t put more strain on your voice. Overall, my experience with Carol Krusemark has left me with nothing but positive things to say, and it was a pleasure working with her to improve my voice."

  • "I met Carol when I was age 69 and had been singing choral music all of my life. After a prolonged repiratory ailment, I found that I couldn’t sing. My voice was cutting out on me. I truly thought that choral singing would be a thing of the past. After my first session with Carol, my optimism returned because she felt confident that she could help me sing again. Her compassion for a struggling singer was evident from the start. What seemed like a daunting task turned into a very pleasurable experience. She gave me the tools to overcome the poor vocal habits that set in after my ailment. I eventually returned to my symphonic choir with the confidence that good vocal heath will always be achievable. Thank YOU, Carol!!!"
